These little free libraries are scattered throughout Salem and I think they’re a fantastic way of sharing books with strangers. As I had a few hours before I was due to check-in, I took a tour of The House of the Seven Gables. I wanted to visit it at some point during my trip, so this seemed like the perfect time. There are a few other connections to the witchcraft period involving John Turner. When John Proctor’s servant Mary Warren accused Salem Town widow Ann Pudeator of witchcraft, one of Warren’s claims involved Pudeator’s specter causing a young Turner to fall from a cherry tree, knocking him unconscious.

Israel has defended its actions, saying it has been targeting militants. One organizer complained that the White House Correspondents' Association - which represents the hundreds of journalists who cover the president - largely has been silent since the first weeks of the war about the killings of Palestinian journalists. Protest organizers said they wanted to bring attention to the high numbers of Palestinian and other Arab journalists killed by Israel's military since the war began in October.

The current resident, the dignified but desperately poor Hepzibah Pyncheon, opens a shop in a side room to support her brother Clifford, who has completed a thirty-year sentence for murder. She refuses all assistance from her wealthy but unpleasant cousin, Judge Jaffrey Pyncheon. A distant relative, the lively and pretty young Phoebe arrives and quickly becomes invaluable, charming customers and rousing Clifford from depression. A delicate romance grows between Phoebe and the mysterious attic lodger Holgrave, who is writing a history of the Pyncheon family.

During the housewarming festivities, Colonel Pyncheon was found dead in his armchair; whether he actually died from the curse or from a congenital disease is unclear. His portrait remains in the house as a symbol of its dark past and the weight of the curse upon the spirit of its inhabitants. The earliest section of the House of the Seven Gables was built in 1668 for Captain John Turner, a wealthy sea captain and merchant who was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1644.

After leaving my backpack in the visitor center, I headed towards the mansion to join the tour and walk around the place that inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel. Upon entering the mansion, I noticed that Caroline Emmerton’s restorations added considerable fan service, as the building was a blend of the original house owned by John Turner and the fictional House of the Seven Gables owned by the Pyncheon family. Think morning-to-night festivities punctuated by raucous moments and jaw-dropping creativity. There are ways around the lack of parking and long waiting lines at popular venues. The Haunted Happening website listed here contains a calendar of events and many helpful tips. Each venue, including the House of the Seven Gables, will give you pointers, as well.

House passes $95B Ukraine, Israel aid package after months of struggle

I opened it up and saw it was full of books anyone could take away and read. Or if you had books you were done with, you could tuck them inside for others. How fitting it seemed for the mini-library to be sitting right outside a house honouring a novel.

The mark of her generous spirit can be found at the Women’s Friend Society on Hawthorne Boulevard and at Plummer Youth Promise on Winter Island. Caroline Emmerton, a philanthropist and preservationist, founded the present-day nonprofit as a museum and Settlement House to assist immigrant families arriving in Salem. Inspired by Jane Addam’s Hull House, she purchased the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion in 1908 and worked with architect Joseph Everett Chandler to restore it to its perceived appearance from the 1600s.

After John Turner III lost the family fortune, the house was acquired by the Ingersolls, who remodeled it again. Gables were removed, porches replaced, and Georgian trim added. In the first half of the 18th century, John Turner II remodeled the house in the new Georgian style, adding wood paneling and sash windows. These alterations are preserved, very early examples of Georgian decor. The House of the Seven Gables is one of the oldest surviving timber-framed mansion houses in continental North America, with 17 rooms and over 8,000 square feet (700 m2) including its large cellars.

With hundreds of protesters rallying against the war in Gaza outside the event and concerns over the conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the perils for journalists covering the conflict, the war hung over this year's event. Hunter allegedly shattered the rear glass door at the official mayoral residence, cutting himself with glass in the process and leaving bloodstains throughout the house, the DA said. He declined to provide details, including whether the suspect intended to harm the mayor. Hamas sparked the war with its attack into southern Israel on Oct. 7, in which militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took around 250 hostage.

A Grand Parade draws a big crowd early in October and signals the official beginning of Haunted Happenings. The first Haunted Happening, in 1982, drew 50,000 people — families, couples, history buffs and Halloween enthusiasts. Today, the city estimates that about 500,000 people visit Salem in October. Due to the nature of the architecture at The Gables’ campus, our historic house museums are not wheelchair accessible.

People love to check out Samantha, the 6-foot bronze statue in downtown Salem. Elizabeth Montgomery’s endearing nose twitches are far from the only depiction of witchcraft where Salem has a leading role. In the 1993 cult classic, “Hocus Pocus,” starring Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker, a teenager named Max resurrects old trouble on Halloween night. Ropes Mansion (318 Essex St.)  and Pioneer Village (310 West Ave.) are two Salem locations.

Lombard tragically passed away in a plane crash just two years later, on January 16th, 1942, and it is said that Gable never recovered from his grief. Army Air Corps and was sent to Europe to fight in World War II. Upon his return to America in 1944, he thought about selling the ranch, but ultimately decided to keep it and wound up living there with his fourth and fifth wives, Lady Sylvia Ashley and Kay Williams Spreckles, respectively.

When Emmerton learned that the neighboring Turner-Ingersoll Mansion was up for sale, she purchased it as the settlement’s practical and collective center. Caroline Osgood Emmerton was born on April 21, 1866 in Salem, Mass. Emmerton grew up in a city that was transitioning from its past as a major shipping port to its future as a manufacturing center for both textiles and the leather industry. George Emmerton, Caroline’s father, worked in the growing chemical industry.

These documents — such as letters, trial transcriptions and court orders — were entrusted to the museum by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for safekeeping. Some can be viewed and read online here, while a few works of art connected to the trials are on view in the American Art galleries at PEM. Look for the dramatic painting, “Trial of George Jacobs, August 5, 1692” by Tompkins Harrison Matteson, 1855.
